Last month Headland set out a roadmap for how companies can drive success in a rapidly changing world – The Collaborative Corporate . We demonstrated that if companies can see that they exist as part of a system and prioritise collaboration with others to contribute solutions to the world’s ‘Grand Challenges’, they can unlock financial, social and environmental value for themselves, their stakeholders and the wider world.
We apply this thinking to how we help clients build what we are calling ‘Collaborative Advantage’ by reimagining relationships, reputation and revenue. But it is also important to our own company and how we pursue our purpose.
Climate change presents one of the grandest challenges of all. That’s why today marks a significant moment for us, as we unveil our Science Based Targets to measure, manage and reduce our carbon impact in line with a 1.5-degree warming scenario, the Paris Agreement and Net Zero.
This year with the help of Seismic, we reviewed our Scope 1-3 Carbon Footprint in detail to understand what levers within our business we could pull to reduce our emissions. This has given us a clear pathway and action plan to achieve our climate goals of reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year, and to measure and reduce Scope 3.
Scope 3 emissions, as with most businesses, are the most challenging aspect of our footprint to address. Here, collaboration will of course be key. To hold ourselves accountable in this space, we have committed to measure our Scope 3 emissions and continue increasing the percentage of suppliers we work with that have Science Based Targets or high-quality Net Zero Targets.
So why are we doing this? Whilst as a consultancy of over 165 people our contribution to the world’s climate emissions is relatively small, it is important to us that we play our part.
- Our people expect it, and rightly so – 97% told us that action on climate change from Headland is a priority for them.
- Our clients expect it – we work with some of the most progressive companies and standard setters in the world when it comes to sustainability, helping them to engage with stakeholders and shape their reputation. From Iberdrola to DS Smith, our clients have ambitious net zero goals and Science Based Targets in place and as part of their supply chain, we are helping them meet their scope 3 emissions targets.
- Our purpose: is to champion collaboration and the widest perspectives to build reputations for a thriving world, which demands a meaningful contribution to the climate agenda that impacts people, countries, and communities the world over.
These targets are an important milestone for us in our sustainability journey. It’s not the beginning, but it’s certainly not the end either. And in the spirit of the Collaborative Corporate, we look forward to working with a range of stakeholders to make meeting them a reality.
